Gastroenteritis – Australia: Oystrs exTasmania Request for information
There are fears a gastroenteritis outbreak caused by contaminated oysters in Tasmania over the Easter weekend has spread interstate. Tasmania's Director of Public Health, Dr Roscoe Taylor, confirmed on Wed 3 Apr 2013 that Victoria's health department was "investigating cases of gastro that may be related to eating Barilla Bay oysters supplied on 25 Mar 2013."
Hepatitis A – Belize
The Ministry of Health is investigating a cluster of 14 suspected cases of hepatitis A that have occurred over the last 3 weeks in Trio Village, Stann Creek District. One such case has been confirmed by laboratory testing.
Cholera, diarrhea & dysentery update (12): Haiti
The cholera epidemic in Haiti, which emerged in October 2010, has caused up to today [27 Mar 2013] the deaths of 8053 people, according to the Ministry of Public Health and Population. Director of Epidemiology, Laboratory and Research of the ministry, Roc Magloire, said that in nearly 2.5 years, the number of people infected has amounted to 651 250. Currently, infection levels are high in the departments of Artibonite, North, and Central, the official said to reporters.

Cholera, diarrhea & Dysentery update (11) Afrika
1) A Zimbabwean man found to have cholera has sparked fears of an outbreak in Limpopo. The 25-year-old man was diagnosed with the infection on Wed 13 Mar 2013, after tests conducted on him revealed he had the Vibrio cholera bacterium.
2) An influx of migrants from the countryside into the Republic of Congo's 2nd largest city, Pointe-Noire, is exacerbating a cholera outbreak that began in November 2012. The outbreak infected at least 389 and killed 10, according to the health ministry and local authorities.
Hepatitis E South Sudan 03_Refugee
Over 88 cases of hepatitis E have been reported in Doro Camp of Upper Nile State, according to a medical source. The health worker reported that in a period of 27 days the camp has reported 88 cases of hepatitis E virus infection, explaining that 5-6 cases per day are reported to various units in the camp. "We have 88 cases with 3 death cases," he said. The officer added that the 3 deceased were all women, 2 of whom were pregnant. The medical officer said that patients suffering from the disease display signs like yellow urine and eyes, joint pains, and general body weakness.
Hepatitis A – Mexico: Oaxaca
Oaxaca is on alert due to an outbreak of hepatitis. Tomas Chinas Santiago, the head of Health Jurisdiction No.5 in the Mixteca region, announced that this institute is dealing with 6 outbreaks [of hepatitis] which have been reported in its area of responsibility. It is fulfilling its responsibilities in conjunction with the population of the [affected] areas in order to avoid complications, such as have occurred in San Miguel, Monteverde, Huauapan, Santiago Tamazola, El Oro Nuxaa, Santiago Yosondua and Santa Cruz districts.
Cryptosporidiosis - Australia: Victoria_Outbreak linked to pools

The Department of Health is working with public swimming pool operators in Melbourne to try to prevent a [gastroenteritis] outbreak from spreading. The department received 155 notifications of people suffering gastro last month [February 2013], which is 3 times the monthly average. The Victorian Chief Health Officer, Dr Rosemary Lester, says some of those cases have been linked to swimming pools. She says pool operators have been instructed to clean pools and increase the amount of chlorine in the water

Hepatitis A – Colombia: Huila
The Health Authorities of the Department of Huila are in a state of alert due to an outbreak of hepatitis A and of dengue fever. The Departmental Secretary of Health, Emma Constanza Sastoque, stated that outbreaks of hepatitis A and dengue have occurred in Huila and may worsen coffee worker unemployment.

A man is dead, and 4 others have been treated in hospital after a Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Footscray, in Melbourne's west.

Residents in Melbourne's northeast are being warned to be on high alert to flu-like symptoms after an outbreak of legionnaires' disease.
3 cases of the infection, which is acquired by breathing in water droplets containing bacteria [Legionella pneumophila], were detected in Bundoora in November [2012]. The Department of Health launched an investigation after it emerged all 3 people lived or worked in or around Bundoora.
Cholera, diarrhea and dysentery update 2012 (48): Haiti
The world's largest agency dealing with global migration is reporting cholera is again on the rise in Haiti. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says Haitian officials have confirmed 3593 cholera cases and another 837 suspected cases since Hurricane Sandy's [24 Oct 2012] passage.
Legionellosis – USA (07): (Pennsylvania) Nosocomial
Five people have now been sickened in the legionnaires' diseaseoutbreak linked to the water distribution system at VA [Veterans Administration] Pittsburgh Healthcare System's University Drive Campus in Oakland, a hospital official reported on Thursday [22 Nov 2012].
Hepatitis E-South Sudan (03)
The UNHCR [United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees] on Friday [9 Nov 2012] warned that its capacity to contain an outbreak of hepatitis E among the refugee population in South Sudan was increasingly stretched at a time when funding for its emergency operation was depleted.

Hurricane Sandy and Legionnaires' disease
In the past several years, we have uncovered anecdotal cases of Legionnaires' disease associated with flooding in the US. Sporadic [cases] and outbreaks of both nosocomial and community-acquired Legionnaires' disease have occurred. In 2011, excessive rainfall plus flooding in Pittsburgh were followed by sporadic community-acquired Legionnaires' disease plus a dramatic outbreak in 2 neighboring nursing homes in which 15 patients contracted the disease over a period of 2 weeks. Legionella in the tap water of both nursing homes matched that of the patients.
Cholera, diarrhea and dysentery update 2012 (46): Haiti, Dominican Republic
The Haitian capital saw a small increase in the number of people infected by cholera after last week's destructive rains from Hurricane Sandy [22 Oct 2012], an international medical group said Friday [2 Nov 2012]. Doctors Without Borders said the group's 5 cholera treatment centers had at least 457 patients Mon 29 Oct 2012. There were 500 patients on Tue 30 Oct 2012. Spokesman Mathieu Fortoul said the number of cholera patients had since dropped, with the group's clinics having about 430 patients Friday
Legionellosis – Germany (Baden-Weurttemberg)
The energy company EnBW confirmed that on Friday [12 Oct 2012] the health department investigated the company's cooling tower in connection with the recent legionellosis outbreak and has taken samples. These samples will now be tested by the country's health department. "Also, it is assumed that the power plant may not be the source of the contamination; the health department has to check all potential sources," said the EnBW press office on Friday night [12 Oct 2012]. "The health department has to investigate all potential sources of infection to get reliable results."

4 weeks after the Cuban government announced that an outbreak of cholera in the eastern part of the island was over, there are unconfirmed reports of new cases popping up in 2 small towns. 27 cases were reported in the municipality of San Luis, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, and 19 more in the Bahia Honda municipality [Artemisa province] 35 miles [56 km] west of Havana.
Leptospirosis – Belgium: (Luxembourg) boy scouts, muskrat
On Mon 20 Aug 2012, the Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre in Brussels (CODA-CERVA) was contacted by the official Health Inspectorate (Control of infectious diseases) of the Walloon region to investigate an outbreak of leptospirosis in boys attending a scout camp.
Seven confirmed dead in Liboi due to cholera outbreak
The government has dispatched medical officers to Liboi along the Kenya-Somalia border where a Cholera outbreak has killed 11 Kenyans and an estimated 20 Somalis in villages along the border in the neighboring country.
Cholera Outbreak Kills Three; Over 200 People Affected
Three people have been confirmed dead in the latest numbers released by the Health directorate of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly. More than 200 cases have also been recorded in the past one month. Health officials say the soaring numbers of cholera cases calls for urgent pragmatic action.

The Public Health Agency has already recorded 14 persons affected in the current legionellosis outbreak detected in Blanes 2 weeks ago. There are 11 male and 3 female patients between 47 and 82 years old, 4 more affected subjects compared to one week ago.
Legionellosis - Canada (08): (Quebec), fatal, cooling tower
Public health authorities say they have identified the source of Quebec City's outbreak of Legionnaires' disease: an office building in the provincial capital. They say samples taken from a cooling tower in a building on St-Joseph Street in Quebec City's lower-town area match the genetic fingerprint of the strain of _Legionella_ bacteria found in patients who've been treated.

Cholera, diarrhea and dysentery update 2012 (41): Cuba
Cuba's government declared Tue 28 Aug 2012, that health workers had eradicated a cholera outbreak that infected 417 people and killed 3, according to a statement from the country's Health Ministry.
Cholera, diarrhea and dysentery update 2012 (42): Africa
A fierce cholera epidemic is spreading through the coastal slums of West Africa, killing hundreds and sickening many more in one of the worst regional outbreaks in years, health experts said. Cholera, transmitted through contact with contaminated feces, was made worse in 2012 by an exceptionally rainy season that flooded the sprawling shantytowns in Freetown and Conakry, the capitals of Sierra Leone and neighboring Guinea.

Dr. Francois Desbiens, Regional Directorate of Health (PRSP) of the National Capital reported on Friday 14 Sep 2012, 3 new cases of legionellosis. The total is now 180 cases, including 13 deaths. The new cases are people whose symptoms began before or shortly after the disinfection of cooling towers. Therefore, the PRSP considers that the outbreak is still under control. The authorities continue to assert that the source of contamination is a cooling tower.

The death toll from the outbreak of Legionnaires' disease increased by one to a total of 9 in Quebec City on Wednesday [29 Aug 2012], as public-health authorities sought additional help in their inspection of buildings that are suspected of harbouring the deadly Legionella bacteria.

A third visitor to a downtown hotel earlier this summer has died after contracting Legionnaires' disease, city officials announced Friday. Media in Ireland are reporting that the man was a retired plumber who was in Chicago to celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary when he apparently contracted the disease.
Cholera: West Africa’s recurring nightmare
West Africa is facing its worst cholera outbreak in years. The water borne disease, which causes severe vomiting and diarrhea, is spreading through coastal slums with more than 20,000 cases this year. Guinea and Ghana are among the affected.

7 people are being treated for Legionnaires' disease in an outbreak in Stoke-on-Trent. Those affected are 6 men and a woman, aged between their late 40s and 75, health officials said; 2 men in their 70s are described as "stable," and the other patients are said to be "improving."

The state has invoked the Epidemic Diseases Act in the textile town of Ichalkaranji in the wake of 12 hepatitis E deaths and over 4085 people infected in a month.
